Greenhouses

& Gardens

I have an absolute passion for greenhouses, or glasshouses as they are sometimes known.

I prefer ‘greenhouse’ as it highlights the two things I love – green for what grows, and house for structure. I love huge greenhouses where acres are ‘under glass’ like the ones of my childhood, but I am equally drawn to tiny, homemade versions and even polytunnels. They are all filled with light, warmth, colour, smells and a sense of growth.

Nothing can beat the smell of thousands of young primroses basking in the sun ready to be shipped to New Covent Garden and people’s flowerbeds or the oily smell of the huge heaters as they are fired up on a cold night. I am privileged to have spent my childhood in this environment, playing and exploring and later, helping and working. Every holiday and trip, I hunt out botanical gardens, nurseries and beautiful houses and gardens just to visit the greenhouses and be enveloped in that world again.

In every painting, one finds the expected randomness of natural life but there is also structure and order – rows of pots, the benches, hanging baskets, and of course, the linear architecture of the greenhouse itself. It is this mix that gives me the most inspiration and pleasure.

Works in this collection range from £60 - £400
